Implementing a Daily Mile programme at your school - Warrick Laverick (Stokeswood Primary School)
Back in February 2012 the Headteacher of St Ninians Primary School was concerned about the lack of fitness displayed by the children and founded The Daily Mile. The Daily Mile has a simple aim – to help children get fit by running or walking for 15 minutes a day in school or nursery. The Daily Mile began with a one month trial and overnight the results were startling. Attention levels and behaviour in class improved and parents said that their children are fitter, more active and alert. Find out more from a local Leicester school who has set up their own version and get hints and tips on setting up your own programme!
Learning Outside the Classroom (Alan Jacobs)
There is an essential need for adventure and challenge in the education of young people. When children participate in Outdoor Learning, they will be consolidating other areas of PE such as developing motor skills, confidence and competence in the outdoor environment as well as both mental and physical challenges. Find out more about improving your school's provision, in line with the nationally recognised Outdoor Learning Resources that support Outdoor Learning e.g. map reading, orienteering, bouldering, journeying - and team building. Alan Jacobs is an experienced PE and Outdoor Education specialist with over 40 years' experience working within different educational settings (early years, primary, secondary and higher education).
Achieving the AfPE Quality Mark - afPE & Sam Gorman (Millfield LEAD Academy Leicester)
All young people are entitled to benefit from a high quality physical education and there is significant evidence to show this supports other learning right across the curriculum. It also contributes to healthy and active lifestyles, improves emotional wellbeing, reduces poor behaviour, increases attendance and develops key skills such as leadership, confidence and social skills. The afPE Quality Mark provide the independent endorsement of a school’s high quality PE provision; find out from a school that has achieved the award this year how the Quality Mark could recognise your whole school contribution as the subject leader.
Active Playtimes Val Sabin
Find out how your school can provide a positive playground experience for every child. Positive playgrounds include bright, safe and stimulating environments; positive playing areas that help improve the health of children and encourage cognitive development, help develop skills of social interaction at all levels, help reduce the incidence of bullying and provide a safe “quiet” area for those who need it. This workshop will help you to analyse the school’s present facilities and environment.

Children learn to crawl before they walk...and walk before they run...So, why expect a child to progress from riding a tricycle and/or bicycle with stabilisers, to riding a bicycle without? The opportunity to master the key aspects of static and dynamic balance is essential. Balanceability is the UK's first accredited 'learn to cycle' programme for children aged 2½ to 6 years old. It is currently active in 400 sites across the UK with 94% of children aged 4 to 6 years old being able to safely ride a pedal bike at the end of the programme.
